A funny thing happened over the weekend. It was late at night and I was sitting in bed with my six month old son Gabriel asleep in front of me (he is so precious) and my beautiful wife Tanya also asleep (no suprise) next to me to my right. I am watching TV with the volume on low when all of a sudden I hear giggling. I look down and see Gabriel giggling in his sleep. His eyes were closed and his eyelids were fluttering and for probably ten seconds he kept giggling like we would if I were tickling him. It was so precious.
Here’s the funny part. About ten minutes later I hear giggling again. This time its coming from Tanya. I look over and see her eyes closed and her eyslids fluttering and she was giggling for about ten to fifteen seconds. It was so precious and I couldn’t help but smile. These two must have been sharing the same dream.

I’m curious what Bears fans think about this story.
As some of you might know, Rex Grossman signed on with the Houston Texans as their 3rd string QB this summer. Well, apparently his first preseason game this weekend didn’t go so well. Reports are saying he injured his hamstring and he will be out 4 to 5 weeks. The Texans are looking for another QB to take over while he is out.
Just curious if there are any Bears fans feeling sorry for him today or do they still have contempt for him because he pretty much gave away the Superbowl a few years ago?

Today I went to the track on the companies dime. They took a group of us to the track and gave everyone 25 dollars to bet with. It was my first time at the track and I can honestly say it was a lot of fun. Not because I won money (I won $38.60) but just the excitment and how relaxing it was to sit in the sun in the afternoon and not worry about emails or orders waiting to be processed.
I didn’t know what I was doing really, I just went up to a machine and picked two horses, one I like based on the odds of it winning and its experience, then with the second bet I did what I thought Tanya would have done and bet on a horse with a name she would have liked (Delightful Daisy). So my horse (Grooms Chaser) finished 6th and Tanya’s horse did much better and finished 2nd so I guess the winnings are really Tanya’s not mine. Either way it was a fun trip and I recommend it to anyone toying with the idea.

After reading the article below, I have concluded that I definately picked the wrong career path. It says in the next to last paragraph that the average starting salary for Communication majors is $35,000 per year. I majored in Communications 5 years ago in December and in that time I have worked for 3 different companies and each time my pay has gone down to where it is now, below 35k.
I know people are going to say one of two things: either I’m still young (28 in October) and I can still make things happen for myself or that things could be worse, especially in this economy. The thing is, right now I think of myself as “already” 28 not “only” 28, and with a pile of bills and a new son it’s hard to imagine changing career paths anytime soon. Therefore today, I am feeling a little career regret.

Now that I have a son I am excited to one day pass on the knowledge I have gained over the years to him. Not just the important life lessons that we all know about but little things, like bowling tips or maybe all this useless chess knowledge sitting in my head taking up space.
On a side note, even if he were to be interested in chess one day, I’m not so sure I would teach him the techniques I know that made me a better player. Don’t get me wrong, I had fun playing chess but once I got better I wanted to play people that were as good as me or even better and once I did that it became less about having fun and more about winning and being competitive, it also became very time consuming.
In regards to bowling, I also picked up little tidbits that helped me become a better player that I think I will pass on to my son, if he lets me. Thinking about these tips makes me wonder if these could also be applied to life in general. Let me know if you think some of these could be life lessons as well as bowling tips.
1. Choose a swing that is comfortable for you. What I mean by this is you have to be comfortable with your swing ( & decisions) so that you can build up your confidence. Having confidence in your swing will go a long way to producing positive results.
2. If your shot goes awry, make small adjustments not big ones. Bowling occurs in such a small area that any adjustment made will be magnified at the other end. For example, if your shots keep missing to the left, then on your next shot move your feet up on the floor, not left or right, one or two inches at the most so that you are starting slightly closer to the foul line, keep the exact same stroke as last time. This will shorten up the shot so that it hits the head pin before it starts veering to the left.
3. Don’t think too much. Too many times I catch myself trying to remember every little tip and guideline and I end up throwing poorly. Those guidelines are important but when it’s time to start your shot, you have to clear your mind so that nothing distracts you. This is very difficult to do because sometimes we can’t help what pops into our heads. However, if you can manage to clear your mind before every shot it will help you relax and truly find that “zone”.

Anyone interested in science should check out this web site, www.sciencedaily.com. I really like going here, specifically the space and time tab, to read the latest news and articles.
I recently read about light and black holes. This article particularly interested me, http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2009/07/090720134239.htm. I won’t bore you with details but I really liked the section where they said they created a “carpet cloak” that concealed the presence of objects placed under it. The lead professor said that not only were truely invisible materials within reach but that it “would open the door to manipulating light at will”.
To me this stuff is fasinating, it’s like science fiction becoming real. Imagine if one day people could become invisible. Do you think the public would embrace this kind of technology becoming available or would fear and religious upheaval prevent it?

This is my first attempt at writing a blog. Not sure how it will develop over time or what paths it will take me so I guess we will find out together. I will touch on many different topics, mostly the ones that interest me and hopefully people will find what I say interesting.
